Campaigner Joan Garrity has thanked the residents of Castle Ward for the great reception she received during the recent by-election.

Joan's name was already known within Castle Ward - prior to boundary changes, the Clarendon Park area was within East Knighton Ward, in-which Joan was first elected in 1999 to represent.

Joan, didn't win on this occasion but was greatly impressed with the reception she received on the doorstep and generally walking around the area. She said, "Its nice to see that people approached me for a quick chat or about the concerns they had about the area."

Leicester City Council's Democratic Services have stated in local press that it was the lowest turnout of voters in around 40 years, and actually could even be the lowest ever.

Leicester South Government Spokesperson Parmjit Singh-Gill, who helped with campaigning in the election, said in local press, "Some of the parties have been badly hit because so many students were away, when we are trying to encourage people to get involved in the democratic process it is a shame that the election was at this time of year."
